Best Phoenix Antique, Vintage and Thrift Shops!
Who doesn't get a little thrill when you find the perfect designer blouse or mid-century modern chair at your favorite resale shop. Whether it's 2nd hand for charity, resale consignment, antiques or just plain old junk, it's really all the same. . . used stuff. If shopping malls and upscale boutiques are not your thing, then we've got the list for you. These are some of Phoenix's best shops for hidden treasures and those items that make you want to shout out loud... "SCORE!" Many of these shops fund charitable efforts through their profits, so you can feel good about shopping there and/or donating there too. The Oracle knows that an avid thrift shopper occasionally needs to make space by donating, so as to be able to shop some more.
This store focuses on vintage and mid-century modern items including, furniture, clothing, accessories and a bunch of "other" stuff. Old record players and records, colorful dishes, miniskirts and aloha shirts and so much more. They have a nice selection of kitschy jewelry and funky sunglasses. And if you are a "little bit" older, you'll have a blast remembering stuff from your childhood! They are closed on Mondays, and don't open until 11am the rest of the week, so there is plenty of time in the morning to have your leisurely cup of Joe before heading out for a fun day of shopping.
Here is the Oracle's vintage trivia question of the day. Who is the naked man centerfold pictured in our photo above, and what was the name of the magazine it was featured in?
For antique and consignment items, you'll find Call It New, Call It Antique a fun place to visit. This antique mall is huge and you can definitely spend a whole afternoon here checking out the wide variety of stuff. And when we say huge, we mean 43,000 square feet of huge. There are 100s of vendors, each little area stocked with goodies. You've got retro, vintage, ethnic, antique, curios, furniture, flea market, records, books, art glass, clothing, military and so much more. Prices vary depending on the vendor, but there are certainly some good buys here. Or maybe price doesn't matter when you find that thing you've always wanted for your collection.
There is also a nifty consignment section where anyone can bring in new or gently used items and put them up for sale on consignment. And don't worry, the "runners" are friendly staff members that will help you bring those much needed items up to the register or assist you in finding things. The Oracle recommends going for one of their sidewalk sales where the vendors come for the day, bring even more stuff and you can perhaps even angle for a better deal.
This is a no-brainer. Who doesn't want to help out homeless and sick animals? All those sweet doggies, kitties, rabbits, hamsters and homeless creatures big and small. They all benefit when you shop at the AHS Thrift Store. Actually there are two locations, one in Mesa and one in Cave Creek, and they both have varying discounts every day. They are also open every day of the week, so you can do a little (or a lot) of bargain shopping any time you like. This is a great place to donate your gently used items, and if you happen to have a good amount of stuff to donate, they will even pick up. As with all charity thrift stores, purchases are tax free, and all the money goes to supporting the animals.
The Oracle has a great tip for anyone stuck at home, out of town, or anyone who prefers to shop online. The Arizona Humane Society has an Ebay page! Yup, you'll find some select items online and up for sale via ebay. And just remember, even if it means that killer designer dress is going for a little bit more online, it all goes to a good cause.
Finally a resale store just for men! Any why not? Men love a good deal just as much as the ladies. Now this isn't a thrift store, but a consignment shop, but you'll find some really great 2nd hand goods here that will make you feel like. . .well. . .a rich man! Clothes, shoes and accessories are available along with a few nifty new items and some music and sports memorabilia thrown in for good measure. You'll find some designer label stuff here like Ray Ban, Ralph Lauren and Nike. Perfect stuff for that date night out to a Phoenix dinner show with your honey. Or pick up a new T-shirt by a cool local artisan as a gift for the special guy in your life.
The Oracle recommends you take your car around back where there is more parking, and you can go in the back door. And if you find yourself with a nice shirt in the closet that you just don't seem to ever wear, then stop in any time. No appointment is needed if you want to offer up some stuff for consignment.
Almost everyone has heard of Nordstrom Rack, where you can purchase items from Nordstrom on clearance. Last Chance however is even better than that! Also selling items from Nordstrom, Last Chance is the place for final-clearance items and returned items. This is where you'll find that slightly scuffed pair of designer shoes or that killer designer dress for up to 75% off the original price. Super fancy designer stuff for cheap! What's the catch you ask. Well, it does get crowded, especially on weekends, and due to the number of "resale" shoppers who simply are there to grab and buy, the store is often chaotic and messy.
The Oracle suggests that if you are one of those avid, stop at nothing to get a great deal shoppers, then this is the kind of place that you will love. If however you don't want to have to sift through the damaged goods to find the prize, or battle the crowds and/or lines, then stick with Nordstrom Rack.
This classy little store has some amazing vintage clothing for both men and women. If you don't believe us (and the Oracle always knows), then just check out their website for some tastefully done photos of just some of their dresses. Or for even more yummy clothing pics to drool over, go to their facebook photos page. At their store you'll find items spanning about 40 years, from the 1940s to the 1980s. The store also features furniture, lighting and decor. We think where they really shine is in the clothing department, so if you have the kind of waistline that can rock a vintage shirtwaist dress or you just love formica, then this is the store for you.
Here is the Oracle's riddle of the day. What is really, really big and full of thousands upon thousands of antiques and collectibles? It's the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall, and with two locations in the valley, and a sign that says open seven days a week, there is no reason not to visit. And if you have never been to an antique mall, it is like visiting a bunch of different stores all in one location. The mall is host to hundreds of different vendors and dealers each with something special to offer. There's antiques from different eras, there's crystal, glass, pottery and housewares, there's furniture and knickknacks, books, jewelry, collectibles, vintage and so very much more. Each vendor sets their own prices, so you'll find some things to be pricey and some things are a screaming deal.
The Oracle thinks this is a go-to place for gift shopping because doesn't everyone collect something? So whether it is a birthday present for Uncle Frank who collects Star Wars stuff, or something special for your sister who collects china tea cups, chances are you won't go away empty handed.
For 20th century clothing finds you will love Antique Sugar. The store is clean, organized and well stocked with men's and women's clothing spanning the entire 20th century. They source high quality pieces and the prices reflect that. This isn't bargain basement finds, but more of an upscale shopping experience even if the clothes are second hand. If you just aren't willing to shell out a bit more for that vintage t-shirt from the 80s (that's just like one you used to own!), then be sure to come at the end of the month for their 50% off sale day, or check out their discount racks. The dressing rooms are clean, there's a small parking lot, and it is in a great downtown location.
A treasure of a store to find that treasure you are looking for. This space specializes in home furnishings and decor. There's even an area out back with more stuff including outdoorsy and rustic items. They have a wonderful variety due to the fact they have over 20 different vendors, each with their own unique style. The key to this store is how well organized, clean and welcoming it is, not to mention the prices are reasonable. Not only do they have antique, one-of-a-kind and hard to find items for your home, but they also have a great little market cafe right in the store. It has a farmer's market kind of feel and features beverages, baked good and other food items from local vendors. They must have figured out that after having to load your truck with all your amazing furniture finds, you will need to come back in for a nice refreshing beverage and a treat.
